Case Summary of Historic ChurchNorth Carolina
THE LOCATION: It is the old church graveyard
that is the focus of our investigation. The building itself is not overly
large, squared off with the foundation set on native rocks. It is perfectly
maintained down to the slave gallery and multiple entrances. The original
glass is still in place in many windows. There is no electricity to
the church lights, etc. (the original oil lamps are still suspended
from the ceiling).
THE HISTORY: The history behind this old church literally fills a book. Dating to the late 1700's the church now at this location is actually the 3rd church built here. It is currently on the National Historic Landmarks register. The cemetery that surrounds it is still in use, however the "old" part (across the 2 lane highway) is no longer used - graves there date to slave times. The current congregation of this church now meets in newer facilities several miles away.
THE LEGENDS: Multiple legends surround this
historic church. Among the persistent stories are tales of organ music
from inside late at night, lights that come on inside the church late
at night, a secret grave in the woods behind the old cemetery, and the
legend that by repeating the proper verse at the back door, the doors
will unlock to admit you.
THE INVESTIGATION: An automatic 35 mm camera caught several anomalies in the old part of the cemetery. This is the only area that has provided significant positive findings so far. A few slight positive EMF readings in the new cemetery have been recorded, but nothing is on film or tape. Out of curiosity two members did pendulum readings followed by dowsing rods, however the strong positive results were traced to an underground water source.
One night run was conducted by Janet Bauguess... she was able to determine that the "lights" phenomenon was caused by car headlights shining through the windows, hitting the suspended oil lamps and refracting back into the glass. A very spectacular phenomenon, but not a ghost.
We have not been able to hear the music, and interestingly enough this church has never had an organ until recently when a non working antique one was donated to them.
However it is fairly certain that this old church is active. When we were able to take photos inside, one investigator got one photo with 2 orbs in it. Perhaps the Civil War soldier that was jilted by his lover and shot through the wall? Or another old soul attached to this church? Or just a trick of the light? Additionally when photographed during a second night run without distracting lights it netted several additional anomalous photos. One concerns the photo of the mist above/right of the church... in the same photos two faces are seen in the lower second window. The old cemetery is rather active with positive photos and EVP phenomenon during the daylight hours. The old graveyard resulted in several mist photos, including the interesting one below. This was centered over an old grave. It may be of interest that the newer section of the cemetery has shown no activity during any investigation.
