When Ghosts aren't Ghosts
by: the Haunted NC/Seven team
When taking photos for an investigation you MUST be aware
of your surroundings. A true orb and a pretend orb can very easily look
alike. The difference is whether you have thoroughly discounted anything
natural in the area. Keep in mind things like not photographing if you've
disturbed dust or pollen(like walking down a dusty road or kicking up
spores in a field or yard), don't photograph through glass, especially
in a moving vehicle. Watch for distant reflective surfaces and outside
light sources. And check the area for any possible reflection (who'd have
thought a CUP could masquerade as an orb?). Orbs are probably the easiest
to mistake. Vortexes and the like are next ( hair, camera straps are the
most common culprits) and then mists (smoke of any kind, breathe exhalation
in the cold). Be careful, follow protocols and think critically when interpreting
your photos!

FALSE ORBS:
Look! It's spooky lights! Well, only if you
consider car lights spooky. Reflection of the front headlight and
rear brake light (wraparound lights) of a F150 pickup parked at
the entrance road.

These odd little specks are just that... specks
No orbs or lights here.
|
Brilliant, opaque and perfectly round. It HAS
to be an orb... not this time. This is a distant streetlight
peeking through the trees.
|
One of our favorites! The small orb along the
floor looked quiet realistic. But it appeared in every shot
not matter what the angle. To our surprise it was the flash
reflecting off a Styrofoam cup laying on the floor! Check
your surroundings when taking photos!
|
These "orbs" are from stirring up pollen or dust from
underfoot outside. (Check out that tall, dry grass)
|
Oooo! Tons of orbs! This is one haunted place!
Not this time... in this case it was insulation dust where a section
of insulation had just collapsed near part of the team.

FALSE VORTEX:

Nope! It's the thin cord that hold the lens cap on.
The cord was held across the lens for this photo.
|

Looks like one this time doesn't it? It even has the "movement"
look that often serves as 'proof'. But again not this time. This time
it was the thin camera strap that swung in front of the lens. The
fabric and distance from the lens give it the odd effect. |

FALSE MISTS:

Cigarette smoke allowed to drift in front of a digital camera lens
from directly below the camera, approximately 10 inches away. You
can see where it was positioned in the lower right side.
